Most do not have the right mindset.
Most have the mindset, "I'm not in this for the money".
With that mindset, they will never get to success as a business.
It's not always their own fault, but they haven't been taught to understand concepts of money, exchange and value. They have no idea what, as a business owner, their time is actually worth. So instead, they waste their time trying to save money, instead of trying to make money.
My mentor taught me:
Spend your:
Time with people;
Your Energy making money,
and you Money on that which brings you 3x return.

It's taking me a while to get each one of these principles down, but I'm getting there.

Great points, only I might add one more to your firing letter: Supply the names and contact information of three viable massage therapists who could continue care.

Without supplying an alternative provider(s), your actions of firing might be construed as "patient abandonment" from a medical legal perspective, esp if there is any legal problems later. It rarely happens, but it does sometimes.

Nice post! I'm just learning the Twitter basics. I have found that I have been able to network like never before with other local businesses. For that reason alone I have become a regular Twitter fan!

Great blog Linda! I do charge what I am worth. I once had a prospect called asked my price and when I said it, she said thank you and hung up instantly. I summed it up to that is not my ideal client. I have thought of other ways to let the prospect know they are getting their money's worth. Like saying I include hot towels on the back and feet. If I am working with a particular issue I may have to use an ice pack or incorporate some stretches. Then they feel inclined to tell me more of their issue and not think of my price, but on how I can help them. Since I started doing that I am getting more bookings.

Comment on Herbology Wrap Demonstration by Linda

Andrea,

The Herbology Wrap is know of detoxification as well as skin exfoliation. It's great to market to your clients as a quarterly service (at least) -- going from one season to the next.

You will need to get these products: Retexturizer (a combination of Chinese herbs) and Extremely Emollient Creme. These products are available at any beauty supply that sells Bioelements skincare products. If you have problems getting it, I can sell it to you. I have extras because I teach the CE course.

You will also need a dry brush and a carrier oil. I use Hazelnut. Some people add other essential oils depending on what they are offering their client.

As far as what to charge -- I charge $90, but would depend on your individual market. Both this one and the Siddha Body Detox have been very good body treatments for me since I first starting offering them in 2000.

You can add it to a massage. I've offered the monthly special as a 1 hour massage and the Herbology Wrap. I've also had it as part of a package when I offered facials and nails.

I think I answered all of your questions, but let me know if you have others.

Hi Linda! Thanks for sharing. I love that you work in your bare feet! Me too! Thanks for recommending how often to add a new treatment. It lets people know you are keeping up to date.
So-I have never had a treatment like this done. What is the herbology? Do you order it? Did you make it yourself? What herbs did you use? How long does a treatment like this last and how much do you charge? That was just the body treatment correct? Can you add massage to that and do it after or do you do it when you are putting the emollient cream on? (is that the massage part?) Thanks!
(Hope Castle was good tonight!)

“When I was working for other people I didn’t feel like I couldn’t be the type of therapist I knew I wanted to be. I always felt like I was being held back. And it wasn’t until I had a huge falling out with a former employer that I finally had the courage to open my own place. That falling out was the best thing that could have happened to me.”

This is exactly what is happening to me as we speak. I have only been working as an MT for a year, but it has been hell at the salon I was working. We just had a HUGE falling out and I quit last monday. As they say one door closes another one opens. I am in the process of opening my own place 3 blocks from my house and I am totally stoked to do things MY WAY!!!

Thank you for posting.
